GAME PREVIEW

Michael Penix Jr. returns to a Falcons offense searching for a reset against Green Bay.

Atlanta enters Thursday night 0-2 after scoring 16 total points through two games. The Falcons are averaging 8.0 points, 262.0 yards and 4.23 yards per play, while turning the ball over 3.5 times per game.

The quarterback context changes this week. Michael Penix Jr. has been named Atlanta's starter for his first appearance of 2026 after recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season. Because Penix has not played this season, his quarterback table is intentionally shown as N/A rather than assigning Cooper Rush's production to him.

Green Bay enters at 1-1. The Packers' early profile is unusual: the defense has allowed only 3.93 yards per play, second-best in the league through Week 2, but has surrendered touchdowns on 85.7% of opponent red-zone trips.

SPECIAL COMPARISON

Atlanta Offense: Penix Starts vs. 2026

Atlanta's team offense during Michael Penix Jr.'s nine starts in 2025 compared with the Falcons through the first two games of 2026.

What to Watch
  • Atlanta's biggest problems have been finishing drives and protecting possessions. Green Bay has been more efficient on a per-play basis, but its 19.1% third-down rate is actually worse than Atlanta's 24.0%. Thursday may hinge on which offense can avoid putting itself behind the sticks.

What to Watch
  • Green Bay has been excellent at limiting raw efficiency, ranking No. 2 in yards per play allowed and No. 4 in sack rate. Atlanta has forced three-and-outs at a top-five rate, but its own sack rate sits 25th. Penix's protection against Green Bay's rush is one of the clearest pressure points in the matchup.

What to Watch
  • There is no 2026 statistical sample for Penix, so EdgeLine will not manufacture one from Atlanta's previous starters. Green Bay's side reflects Jordan Love's actual season-to-date production. For Atlanta, the question is whether Penix can restore the cleaner, more productive offensive baseline the team showed during his 2025 starts.

BOTTOM LINE

Atlanta is changing the most important variable in its offense.

The first two weeks produced one of the league's least efficient scoring profiles, but Penix's return gives the Falcons a different reference point. During his nine 2025 starts, Atlanta's offense was substantially better in scoring, yardage, yards per play, third-down conversion and ball security than the 2026 unit has been through two games.

Green Bay's defense presents a difficult first assignment because of its early per-play efficiency and pass-rush results. The matchup is less about expecting Penix to immediately recreate last season and more about seeing whether Atlanta's offense begins moving back toward that prior baseline.

Methodology

Team and player rankings use EdgeLine's 2026 season-to-date dataset through Week 2. Early-season rankings are small-sample snapshots. Michael Penix Jr. has no 2026 player metrics in this preview because he has not yet appeared this season. The special 2025 comparison uses Atlanta team offense only in games started by Penix.
